Common Good

advancing our common good

This area focuses on issues of social and economic discrimination, inequity, and exclusion (racism, LGBTQ+ exclusion, xenophobia), health and violence (hate crimes and gun violence), poverty, hunger and homelessness, and income inequality.

The Common Good Working Group will be composed of the members of two of our former working groups, Dignity of All and Keep the Peace.

  • All Are Welcome Posters
Common Good invites faith communities to display a “statement of welcome” poster as a way to support, acknowledge and encourage welcome and dignity of all people within our places of worship. (The one attached here is a sample— contact us if you’d like a copy for your community!)

  • Affirming Communities List
Interfaith Action has created a map of LGBTQ+ affirming faith communities in Allegan, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties. This is available for download as a resource for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. (See our Affirming Communities list)

  • Award for Leadership of the Common Good

As part of its celebration of the National Day of Prayer, Interfaith Action is launched its first Award for Leadership for the Common Good. The award recognizes a Michigan leader who has advanced or secured policies that promote the common good of all Michiganders, particularly those who historically have not experienced equal protections or support. Nominations for the award are open to the public each year and a selection committee of 7 individuals determines the final award. Read more about our Award for Leadership for the Common Good winners.

Tiny Houses for Big Change - Ongoing - While we continue to offer ongoing support, this organization began with a group of children at St. Augustine’s Episcopal in Benton Harbor who wanted to build a tiny house for a neighbor experiencing homelessness.  Now they’re partnering with Interfaith Action, Andrews University architecture students and Harbor Habitat, as well as other generous community donors, to put the plan into action.
